How to Use This Site
We have tried to keep the site simple to get around despite
the quantity and variety of information. Our navigation system was recently
reworked to allow access to any section from any page on the site. We
offer a graphic based menu at the top of each page and a text-only menu
at the bottom of each page.
A Site Map can be found below.
This map lists where each menu button leads. Many of these pages will
have subdirectories with lists of useful content, such as costume building
techniques, advanced ionstructions for many of the period cosume patterns
we carry and tips for using many of the products we sell.
SITE MAP
Across the top of each page you will see a table of buttons representing
links to the main sections of this website. It is a huge site, so creating
a menu that would link each page from every other page would be quite
a feat! However, by following some of these links you will come
to a detailed table of contents for each of the main sections.
Here's an alphabetized list of the main sections of the site with a
brief description of each section:
- BOOK STORE - Order books through
us or through our affiliation with AMAZON
- BONES/STAYS - A new section entirely devoted
to Bones, Stays and Steels, now broken down by product type. Find
the steel you need through this index.
- CATALOG INDEX - a "table
of contents" for our online catalog. Each product page linked
from this page has a price list with buttons where you may add items
to your shopping cart.
- CONTACT - links to our contact
information including a link to e-mail us for direct inquiries (please
do not use our Guestbook for this!)

overview along with basic corset building instructions with diagrams
and a glossary of corset terms.

SHOPPING CART
Our Shopping Cart is fully integrated into the Catalog
section and other select pages of the site. As you visit product description
pages you will see a prominent text link at the top of each page which
will take you to an detailed price list of the products in that category.
This price list features "ADD" buttons which will "automagically" add
your desired item to your shopping cart when you click on it.
Fear not if you push a button by mistake or change your
mind later... your order has a few more stages to go through before
it gets sent to us! Just think of the Shopping Cart as a "reminder list"
of items you are thinking of ordering. You can easily remove items from
this list or alter quantities when you view the Shopping Cart page.
The Shopping Cart, when updated, will also display the total price (before
taxes, shipping & handling) of the quantity you have entered.
From the catalog pages the default quantity of any item
is "1", or the minimum quantity if one applies. On our project pages
you will in some cases see a price list of materials required for that
project or pattern which includes the ADD buttons. These buttons will
add the required item to your cart in the quantity needed for the project.
We hope this feature will make it easy for our users to order supplies
for a particular project.
You may now view and shop our entire site in either Canadian
dollars or U.S. Dollars. At the top of each
price list you will see a heading stating which currency is shown, and
a link to toggle to the other currency. To shop and view our prices
in the shopping cart in either currency, simply toggle the currency
used by clicking on the link. When you check out, your total will be
shown in the chosen currency and your purchase will be transacted in
that currency.
The Shopping Cart can be linked to by the form button
at the bottom of each catalog page or from the SHOPPING CART link button
in the ORDER sub-directory.
PLEASE NOTE that some features of the Shopping Cart
may only work in Version 4 and higher browsers. You MUST have Javascript
and Cookies* enabled in your browser in order
for the Shopping Cart to work properly. If you have an older browser
or prefer not to use this method and would rather order items with a
current price list in hand you may use our Order
Form. If all else fails you may use our Printed
Order Form and place your order by mail or fax.

COOKIES
We use three cookies on this site. One is the "Order"
cookie that contains the items in your shopping cart. This cookie is
required to "remember" what you've added to your Shopping Cart as you
browse for products. Because the cookie stores this information on your
computer in a temporary file, you can safely leave the catalog section
and visit other areas of the site without losing the contents of your
cart. However, as soon as soon as you close your browser session this
cookie will vanish!
The "Order" cookie is also used to remember
the contents of orders you place from the order form page. This cookie
is there in case you need to leave the page after filling in a few items
to check prices or view other items. (Cookies do not need to be enabled
for the order form to be functional.)
The second cookie we use is the "Contact" cookie. This
cookie remembers all the contact information you submit to us during
the ordering process and will be there when you return another time.
This means that, for your convenience, you will never have to enter
this information again, unless you delete your cookies. This cookie
exists as a file ONLY on your computer. It does not exist on our system
or our host server. We do not use these cookies to collect information
about you and your contact information is ONLY sent to us when you finally
submit your order form.
The third cookie "remembers" which currency
you are using to shop with us: either Candian dollars or U.S. dollars.
This ensures that each page you visit which is part of the shopping
cart system shows you our prices in the currency you selected.
Although we do store some contact information in our system
to set up accounts for our more frequent customers, we do not normally
keep this information on file for our on-line customers. When completing
your order for shipment your contact information is held in strict confidence:
we do not pass your personal information along to other companies or
sell mailing lists.
E-MAIL
All incoming and outgoing e-mail from Farthingales offices
are scanned for viruses to protect our customers. If you received infected
e-mail that appears to be from us, it is most likely that our return
address has been "spoofed" by a virus program which mines
e-mail addresses from the address books of infected computers.
SECURE ONLINE PAYMENT
We currently accept only VISA. MasterCard, American Express
and PayPal as methods of payment from this website. We regret that we
do not accept personal cheques or money orders as payment for orders
made through this website. (Please see our Terms
of Trade for further information on our policies.)
When you submit your credit card number to us through
this site it is sent to us through an encrypted email. We use the "Pretty
Good Privacy" method of encryption which is in use successfully on commercial
websites all over North America. That means that in the highly unlikely
event that your order is intercepted no one else will be able to read
your credit card information. Also, your credit card payment is processed
BY US and not by a third-party online banking system. This system allows
you to order from us in complete confidence.
However if you prefer NOT to send us your credit card
information through this website, please indicate that your preferred
method of payment is by PayPal and then call as soon as possible us
to give your credit card information by phone. We cannot process orders
until payment information is received.
You may also now pay us by PayPal with your VISA, MasterCard,
Discover, American Express or iCheck. If you have a PayPal account with
money in it which you've received through auction sales, etc., you may
pay us by that method without using a credit card. For those who do
not have PayPal accounts but wish to find out more about setting one
up, visit the PayPal
website for further details. Setting up your own account is free
and there are no extra charges for making a payment.
