Laughing Moon Pattern#00-pattern-06 Saloon/Can Can girl.
The outer ruffles were made of #24-5534-02 the "crisp" tutu net. The fabric was dyed in the same dye bath as the organdie but being of a different fiber (nylon) it did not take the dye quite as intensely. The inner ruffles are made of #90-1790-01 called paper nylon to increase the volume and create the classic "swish" sound of a crinoline or square dancing skirt. These ruffles were left white and all edges of each fabric were finished with a narrow serging in black thread. The bodice front was decorated by using the discharge process to remove colour so that new brighter colours could be painted in with out disappearing into the black. A free form pattern was used to keep the process simple and and colour was added randomly as were pearls, gold beads, leaf sequins and "rubies". The velvet is item #99-2260-90 and the edges were all piped with silk that had been dyed along with the crinoline fabrics, again being of a different fibre created a different shade of purple but all three work well together. More details on the discharge process can be found in the "discharge and devore" section of the catalog index. The back of our Saloon Girl was decorated with tubular crin #38-5101-01
in white. Being of polyester it is not dyeable, therefore we used floral
spray paint. It took several coats and we left it to dry for over week
before handling it. It was then simply twisted and manipulated and anchored
in place with a few hand stitches and beads and sequins. It may look
fragile but it is remarkably resilient.
