Hoop Steel/Crin
Steel/Tutu Steel
We have several weights of hoop steel and you will likely
be able to find one to suit your purpose. One style is "thread
covered", it can be bent but not easily, comes in 3 widths
and two colours; the narrowest is known as tutu steel as it
is used in tutus for partner work. The second type of steel
is "plastic coated" and this comes in varying widths and weights.
Both require tin snips to cut.

Plastic Coated Hoop Steel/Crin
Steel
50-8406-06 white 6mm(1/4")
6mm wide X .6mm thick,
this is the same quality as the spring steel bones #50-8206
|
| This product was
brought in, for those who build a lot of corsets,
to limit
waste. Rather than cutting pre-tipped spring steels and having
pieces left over which are too small to use,
cut just the
lengths you need from this which is sold by the metre. It
is not easy to cut and requires bolt cutters
rather than tin
snips. You can use "U" tips 91-8015-06 to
tip the ends. |
|
50-8405-10 white 10mm(3/8")
10mm wide X .5mm thick
this is a light weight hoop steel better used for bustles
and small hoops rather than large hoops (unless several hoops
are incorporated). Easily cut with tin snips. |
|
50-8406-14 white 14mm(1/2")
14mm wide X .55mm thick
this is our strongest hoop steel which is capable of supporting
large hoops and heavy fabrics without collapsing. It cannot
be used for the tighter curves required by a bustle. |
| |
| NOTE: These
hoop steels are made of spring steel and the ties that bind
the coils should never be cut. Not only because you will have
a major tangled mess on your hands but because they are coiled
under pressure and cutting the ties is dangerous. Spring steel
naturally wants to "spring" out straight. |

Hoop Wire
62-8420-12 ½” wide, white
Hoop wire is actually two wires covered with fabric. This
is an inexpensive alternative to hoop steel and is fine for
single wear or light use - great for Halloween or single
event costumes. This product is not made of spring steel
and can get bent out of shape. The fabric coating does not
stop oxidation of the steel wires so you may eventually get
rust stains developing. It is easy to work with and you can
sew your hoops ends together by stitching through the fabric
layers between the two wires. Both our 1l mm tips #91-8016-11 and
plastic tips #91-840E-11 can be used to
cap the ends if needed. This is not a good choice for theatrical
productions
or regular wear as it will not maintain it's shape as well
as spring steel under heavy activity, spring steel has a
natural inclination to “spring” out straight
and this helps it to maintain circular shapes, this product
does not have this inclination and may need to be straightened
whven you uncoil it.

Bone Casing Tape
Bone casing looks like a ½" wide ribbon. It is in fact a channel
into which bones up to 3/8" wide can be slid. The advantage to bone
casing tape is that two layers of coutil are not necessary. The bone
casing gets stitched to the garment by machine before the bones are
slid into the casing. Made of tightly woven 100% cotton, bone casing
is dyeable and durable. Certain time periods saw single layer corsets
with casings.

Hoop Connectors
00-8400-14 designed to fit 50-8406-14
00-8400-11 designed to fit 50-8405-10

Due to many requests for something, which
could be used to attach the two cut ends
of hoop steel when forming a "hoop" Farthingales
decided to have a product made. This decision
was in part due to demand and in part due
to the fact that the hoop steel manufacturers
had nothing to offer. One of our customers
came up with the prototype and kindly sent
us both a pattern and a sample. It is a
rather costly venture but we are sure the
end result will be worth the effort on our
part and the cost on yours.
The principle behind the idea is to make
the joining of hoop ends as simple as possible
and to make them simple to disassemble as
well. Present ways of connecting the ends
seem to be either binding with medical tape
or drilling a hole through both ends and
stitching together. The tape eventually
leaves a sticky residue and is not simple
to remove and the drilling is not always
an option, depending on tool availability
and quality of steel.
These hoop "connectors" are a channel of stainless steel into which
you insert one end of the cut steel before sliding it into the casing.
The ends of the "connector" are shaped such that there are no corners
to catch on the casing and the hoop steel easily slides through. When
it gets to the end simply slide the other cut end of hoop steel into
the empty end of the "connector" Done.

Hoop Steel Ends
91-840E-11 fits all 10mm and 11mm wide steels

Plastic tips to place on the ends of steel
to cover the sharp cut edges and to offer
the ability to sew the steel ends to fabric.
Ideal for partial hoops such as the top
layers of the Civil War hoop petticoat and
for bustles, stitch the steel ends to a
fabric foundation. They can also be used
in boned bodices and corsets where wider
steel is used. The tips blunt the end and
can be stitched into place to avoid shifting.
These tips fit the following items:
50-8405-10 hoop steel
50-8125-11 German Plastic Bones
50-8001-96 11mm Wide Spiral Bones
